This is why I should NOT get on the internet while working.
It's Wednesday, 6:50 pm. I have an essay due on Monday at 5:00 latest or I'm dead. I have not finished going through the research, which includes this huge book that's all about the subject. During the past two hours, I've googled Bacardi, Puerto Rican rum, tried to find places to get said Puerto Rican rum on this island all the way across the Atlantic, looked up the origins of Bacardi, Don Q, and Ron del Barrilito (now doesn't this make me sound rum obsessed), browsed through lj, failed to find and alternative class for this term, ranted about the lack of rum selection in the shops versus the endless rows of wine (there I go again. Okay, I want to make coquito, a Puerto Rican holiday drink made with condensed milk, coconut milk, and rum, which, being Puerto Rican, means light rum, and they only seem to have the darker varieties and I don't feel like paying double for Bacardi, which isn't that great according to rum connosieurs and is only fake Puerto Rican anyway. Yes, I'm feeling patriotic. It's a bit troublesome over here where not even Salsa is Puerto Rican), and looked up House/Wilson. Oh, and Peter keeps distracting me with his sexuality. Why can't I do research without thinking of porn?
Not that I'm not panicking or anything. I just seem to run away when I'm freaking out instead of actually fixing the situation.
Oh, and I’m falling asleep. Like usual. Me want nap.
ETA: Queee?! The Field Museum is having a Taste of the Aztec World thing now? A bunch of restaurants are going to be sampling Aztec inspired dishes. Not that this doesn't sound like what the British Museum is doing this year, but what is it with the Field Museum having the Aztec stuff when I'm not there? They just had an all Aztec exhibit. Why, Field, why? Would it have killed you do this in the summer? The Field is in Chicago, by the way. Screw it. Some of the best stuff is here, anyway. But I want the food. I'm such a food junkie.
ETA again: I really need to get off this computer. But wait a minute; I just realized something. There's a girl in my class who looks just like Phoebe, Jack's fiancee in 30 Rock. I was so certain that I'd seen her before, only I don't recall actually meeting her. And a girl in my half unit course last term looked like Linda with an I from Doctor Who. Weeird.

For some reason I'd always thought Bacardi was Cuban, but I haven't done nearly as extensive rum research as you.
I'm almost reluctant to post this and encourage you to answer it, so I'll just say: don't answer this comment! Answering comments is bad! Get to work! I'm sure you'll be fine, though.
That thing at the Fields Museum sounds awesome (sorry to rub it in). They had a similar thing with the Smithsonian a while ago (actually, the whole cafeteria at the Museum of the American Indian and yeah, they're still using "Indian", has traditional foods from all of the earlier American indigenous groups), and it was pretty cool.

It is. That's why I called it fake Puerto Rican. The company was founded in Cuba by a Catalan immigrant, then to get around the expensive US import duties, he built a distillery in Puerto Rico to sell to the US market, which came to think of it as Puerto Rican. Bacardi markets itself as Puerto Rican, too. It says it on the bottles of the rum produced in Puerto Rico. No mention of Cuba on the label. However, here I found a bottle from the Bahamas that said "Casa fundada en Cuba". You will not see that in Puerto Rico. On the tour at the distillery in San Juan, they will tell you that it began in Cuba, but they make it sound as if it was relocated and it was in PR where it made it big, which isn't true. What annoys me about this is that the company has tricked Puerto Ricans into thinking that we started and own the most successful rum company in the world (and we are proud when it comes to rum), when we really don't. And we have so few achievements/successes/things to be proud of that other people have actually heard of that we cling to whatever we can get. I feel cheated.
I'll answer it if I want to! I'm entitled to food breaks. Actually, I forced myself to turn off the computer, then I waited an hour after I got back on to answer, but I just finished going through the photocopies. Now I just have one (albeit a huge one) book to go through. When I finish that, the research is done! \o/
I want to go! I love tasting food I've never had before.

Ah, and I'm sure the embargo on Cuba has a bit to do with it as well. I saw a program about...something, don't remember what...recently and that's where they mentioned the Cuban thing.
And you need to go on livejournal to eat? Mmm-hmm. ;) But yay, almost done!
I am usually a bit of a food wimp, but sometimes if I'm in the mood I'll be willing. Especially when I'm traveling because hey, that's the experience.

Probably. Although they also have a distilleries in Mexico and other places. Believe it or not, one of the last times I was in Mexico (ages ago), I actually had to correct some people who thought Bacardi was Mexican.
Of course. That's my excuse. Besides, it's troublesome to eat and take notes and try not to spill food on library books at the same time. I'm not the neatest eater.
All long as it doesn't have any ingredients I don't like, I'll eat it, though my intense dislike of bell peppers does eliminate a lot of stuff off the menu.

Wow, I had no idea rum production was still such a contentious issue. I thought that went out with the triangle trade.
So instead, spill food on your laptop!
You don't like bell peppers?!? What are you, insane?! They are fabulous and I will not hear otherwise!

But see, I push the laptop away to a safe distance, whereas I like to have the books close to me to see the small print.
They're awful! I find them so bitter and sour. I've tasted only one sweet red pepper in my entire life. One! And oddly enough, it was right here. And they're everywhere. I will pick them out of my food no matter how tiny the pieces are.

Heh. All-right...;)
Seriously? You must not be getting the right kinds. I love them. I chop them up and eat them raw.

I've tried them everywhere. PR, Mexico, Illinois, here, and except for that one, I haven't liked any. Though I've been sitting at the same table with people who said that the peppers in the meal tasted very sweet while I found them sour, so maybe my tongue perceives them differently. I find tomatoes sweet, though.

Well, some tomatoes can be sweet. Some are not. I think it's really dependent on the soil and when they're picked, like grapes.
