I have the opposite problem. I have trouble writing "pants" all the time unless it's "underpants". There are so many times when I've had to go back and delete "trousers" to write "pants". And I've actually forgotten the American expression sometimes. The American characters give me more trouble now than the British ones. I just love British so much. Big fan, me. My stance on the matter is that personally, since I'm not from the US and English is not my mother tongue (even though I count is as one of my native languages since I've known it for practically my whole life, but I don't know any other Puerto Rican who considers it anything other than a foreign language, which it is) even though I grew up speaking American, I'm not bound to any particular brand of English and can mix and match however I want.
