And now I can't concentrate on my thesis because I keep thinking about that movie. It was good. Really good. I want to see it again. Now. It's exactly what I wish all summer movies would be like. There's plenty of action but accompanied with lots of intelligence. Forget turning your brain off (I hate that phrase, movies that require that make my head hurt). It's reality in so many ways. Replace the aliens with some random, oppressed human group and we have the same thing. No sugarcoating, no whitewashing at all. And the way they developed the main character just drives the point further home.

I want this movie. It's not your typical alien movie (not that I have much experience with those, I admit). I highly recommend it. Really.

Ah, District 9...I keep hearing very good things. And yet I'm pretty sure I'm not going to see it. I don't know why. But I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's cool when you see a movie like that, that's so good it sticks in your mind and has you thinking about it the whole day. Or longer, sometimes.

ETA: Happy early birthday! Or...at this point on time birthday. I guess. Woo!

Why not? I really didn't expect to like it this much. I'm still running scenes over in my head. I'm likely going to see it again when it reaches the cheap theatre.

Thank you! Well, since I was born in PR, I can claim that it's been my birthday for two hours now.

I don't know, just...I get the point; it's an allegory for prejudice/anti-immigrant sentiment, and the fact that it's coming from South Africa means it'll probably have all sorts of interesting apartheid undertones, but...it's just not something I have this great urge to see.

And it's past midnight here as well, so yay!

It was good, huh? Hm, well, okay, the whole oppression allegory is cool and all, but they don't entirely forget that these beings are aliens, right? They still have fun with all the "completely non-human sentient creatures from another world" stuff, and not make them entirely interchangeable with some human culture, right? Because I'd be sad if they did.

My comment voyeurism tells me it's your birthday! I'm lame for needing comment voyeurism to learn that, but in any case, I hope you had a good one!

Um... define 'fun'. The point is that precisely because they're aliens and odd and the meeting doesn't run smoothly (crime, attacks, etc.), most of the population of Johannesburg are afraid of them and just want them to go away. And from the governments side, they just want to exploit their technology, which they actually can't because teh weapons are biologically programmed to only be operated by the aliens, so humans can't use them. So they turn to less savoury methods to get what they want. So the plot is geared around the fact that they are alien in every sense of the word. It's really good. I keep gushing about it to everyone, but I can't stop. I might watch it again this week.

Thank you! I saw Star Trek again, which was cool. It took my mind away from that big 26n number. I don't mind it, but it just seems so big.
