A couple of Puerto Rican girls! No kidding! I was at Pret (a café style shop where they sell cheap sandwiches) when I heard someone call out from behind me, "Boricua!" and I turn around and two girls start talking and there's no way to confuse that wonderful accent. I practically threw my money at the cashier to pay for my sandwich from my hurry to talk to them before they left. One's studying her master's, the other her PHD, both at SOAS and they both come from The UP (Uni of Puerto Rico) from the History dept and this is the coolest thing ever! It's true what we say. Puerto Ricans are everywhere. Even if it's just one of us, we're there. Now I just need some Mexicans. I know they're out there.
Now off to write Adam fic. And hopefully finish my essay. Damn essays. I can’t go out without feeling guilty because of these damn things.

Seriously, though. Yay! I remember in Germany, I was so very freaked out by the lack of people speaking Spanish anywhere, after being so used to at least being able to speak it most service people here, at the very least. I finally bumbled into a little store that sold Mexican art and was run by a Mexican lady and it was definitely a bit of a comforting feeling.
Have fun with the essay (hah!); I know the feeling, I can't surf the web randomly without feeling the glare of my stat text book on me.

It was very uncomfortable not automatically hearing Spanish everywhere, though you do hear it, mainly from Spanish tourists, though there seem to be a large number of Colombians, though nowhere near the number of Mexicans there are in Chicago. It's so nice to be talking to people from my old uni. It's like a having a little piece of home with me.
Yeah, thanks. It's not so bad, really. At least I love the subject matter, but I don't even want to think about the third one. I have no clue what to do it on and it's due in less than a month. And the subject area is completely unknown to me.

I remember parts of Chicago are honestly like being in Mexico! Of course, the fact that the only time I've been in Chicago it was on and around Mexican Independence day probably means it wasn't a representative sample...Having the little pieces of home is nice. My study abroad was with a group, so most of that was there, but there's so many other aspects of home I was missing...but now I just miss Germany.
Heh, I know what that's like. Especially the not knowing anything about the subject matter one. I guess research is always in order, but...it's just such a drain to think about.

When were you in Germany? I've never been anywhere in Europe outside of England and Ireland.
It wouldn't be a problem if I had more time, but I have like two weeks per essay, which is fine for the Aztec's ones (my specialty), but I'm freaking out that the essay's not going to be good enough because of my lack of knowledge and since it's master's now the standards are higher, too.

I was in Germany...two years ago? Yeah, two years ago this winter. It was a winter semester class on business, focusing on the book business in particular (the price of books is uniform throughout the country, meaning no Barnes and Noble super-discount type stores) but I also picked up a lot of history and some, uh, minimal German. Enough to get my curry-wurst, anyway ;)
Oh, the Aztecs are fun; I'm in a Latin American history class right now, and already know most of their stuff. The professor puts up slides of different places and I'm like, "Been there. Totally been there. Got sick there. Almost broke my nose there." It's fun. Well, at least if you already know enough about the Aztecs, in theory you could use the time it would take you to research them on the other paper. But theory and practice...never do seem to align.

Cool. I wanted to do take a semester to go somewhere, but then I was graduating, so I did it now.
It does help a lot that I know so much about them, but there's so much information out there, so many details that I'm still exploring that I really need to do serious research. Which is fun, really, if it weren't for that damn deadline.
