A month ago, I would look at a picture of gorgeous Milo like this one and just drool. Now instead of melting into happy goo, I'm geeking all over the place about the lighting, wondering if this was lit by two lights or three (I think three), smiling over the fact that it matches his expression so well and oh yeah, that's Milo. But look at that gorgeous lighting. What is wrong with me?

I'm the same way about movies. I can't watch a movie anymore without evaluating its script: the pacing, the dialogue, how well the subplots connect to the main plot, etc. So I sort of know how you feel :P

That said, that really is some gorgeous lighting. (And gorgeous Milo too ;) )

For a while, I've already been analyzing the script while watching a movie, so that wasn't as much of a shift for me. That is, until I started my Directing class and became aware of "beats". I'm resisting paying attention to those while watching a movie, though, because it will probably ruin everything. So that's only for reading an actual script. I have to stop the madness somewhere. But now there's also lighting and camera angles and depth of field and sound quality...

My goal is to be able to light like that (hopefully with such a handsome subject).

Nothing at all. You're just more educated in the field of lighting, and you're able to focus and concentrate on that too.

It's very distracting when watching movies, though. Another advantage to DVDs as I can rewind and pause and obsess over how they lit something. It is fascinating stuff.
