I'm 25,000 words into my Sherlock fanfic. No idea how long it's going to be. I don't exactly have a plan, just loose ideas about where to go. And I have to come up with a characterization for Harry, who I hadn't thought of that much before now.

I was listening to The Three Patch Podcast last night and they were mentioning their favorite fanon, and I hadn't heard of any of it. I'm really very new to being in the Sherlock fandom other than reading a bunch of Johnlock fics and some meta years ago. It's not until now that I'm joining communities and actually writing my own Sherlock fic, so I'm not familiar with any fanon. On one hand, I feel like I've missed out on a lot of fun, but on the other hand, I also don't have any preconceptions and don't feel hampered with having to represent things a certain way just because a lot of people like it like that. Besides, I write ace fic, so I'm already going against the grain. I feel kinda awkward in SW fandom because I don't headcanon Hux as being a cat person, a fanon that's so universal that it's practically canon. So I guess it's a good thing to not know much fanon right now.

Fanon can be super limiting, especially if your headcanon actively goes against the majority. Can't list down any specific moments off the top of my head, but there have def been times when my personal preferences skewed away from popular fanon.

I don't post fics until I'm finished, I'm afraid. That's the only way I can actually finish them. I might be halfway through. I'm not sure. My fics are always either tiny or looong.

I feel you! I only just discovered (and promptly binge watched) Sherlock a few months ago and only started getting involved with the fan/writing community even more recently.

Ooh, thanks! I hadn't seen that list before. I just followed the blog, too. I was just about to look for Sherlock blogs when the whole mess happened, so I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I wouldn't worry about conforming to fanon, a lot of it is not even supported by a close reading of the show. Go ahead and make your own, write *your* story.
